Wood or Vinyl? Choosing the Correct Fence Material

Fences come in all shapes and sizes. The kind of fence you have installed depends greatly on the purpose you intend to put it to. Wood and vinyl are the two kinds of fences that most people choose between. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

wood fence

Wood fences can give your home a nice, traditional look. If you would prefer a more rustic appearance for your home, then a wood fence can certainly be of help. In neighborhoods with houses that have a more conservative look having a wood fence built around your yard can make your home blend in better with those of your neighbors.

One of the major disadvantages of having a wood fence installed is the upkeep. Although a solid, sturdy, high quality wood fence can last for a decade or more, keeping up the appearance and the structural integrity of such a fence can take a great deal of work. Wood attracts termites. It is therefore possible that termites can invade your fence, which means you will have to spend money to have them exterminated. Then there is the painting and chipping and additional maintenance required to help keep the fence looking presentable. This can consume many hours of your day and cost you lots of money.

Vinyl is an alternative to a wood fence. Having a vinyl fence can add long-lasting beauty to your home. One of the great things about vinyl is that it has the look of wood. You can therefore get the aesthetic advantages of having such a fence installed without having to deal with the downsides of an actual wood fence. Vinyl is also very long lasting. And it is not that hard to clean and well preserved. All you need to do is spray it down with a hose and you’re done.

The major disadvantages of vinyl are two. They are usually extremely limited in the colors they come in. Depending on the color of your house this can be a significant problem. The other major downside is that they can be expensive initially. If you are on a limited budget as far as purchasing a fence, this can present a serious problem for you.

What it all comes down to is weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of fence. The choice you make ought to reflect your sense of style and taste, but it must also recognize the limitations of your wallet.
